We find if useful to occasionally recap the contents of our blog so that new readers don’t have to hunt too much for the information that they may need as we’ve been helping to identify great bird repeller solutions for over 15 months. (Don’t let that stop you however as we have some great demo videos and information thoughout our blog posts…)

There are many tools available to you as bird repellers. They are safe, non-lethal, and effective in keeping birds off of your home, decking, balconies, builidings and other structures. They can be effective for outdoor areas, farms, orchards, fields and other agriculture.

Bird Netting and Bird Spikes very simply keep birds out of or

off of structures. These are effective bird repellers for keeping birds out of rafters, porticos, bell towers, and off of awnings, antennas, overhangs, signs, pipes and all other sorts of architectual elements that attract resting birds and lead to lots of bird messes below.

Ultrasonic Bird Repellers and Sonic Bird Repellers (some units can do both) are effective for small areas like balconies all the way up to fields, orchards, warehouses, and outdoor factory and building complexes. Using a motion detector can improve the effectiveness of small units on balconies, decks and porches so that the unit is not always broadcasting sonic or ultrasonic signals.

You can watch what happens in this short video when a sonic repeller is turned on at this factory…

Last but not least, Visual Bird Scares are another item that when used properly can help chase and scare birds away from railings, moored sailboats, rafters, rooftops and other areas. Animal decoys combined with sonic units can work well on golf courses and parks.

You’ ll find Humane Bird Controlat Bird-X, the trusted industry leader in bird repeller solutions that’s been doing this since 1964.

There are many areas where safe and effective bird repellers such as bird spikes, bird netting or even ultrasonic bird repellers can be used with great success to eliminate bird mess and roosting. Larger open areas or large building complexes can pose a different challenge. Sonic bird repellers can be a great alternative for areas that may be a bit more remote or less heavily populated by workers, such as warehouses, factory complexes, garbage dumps, even farms or orchards. Here is a demonstration video of using just such a sonic bird repeller to get birds off the ground and buildings.

10. Open Architectural Structures: You may have a building with a cupola or belfry

ACH Routing Number EASTWEST BANK

or a loft that is open. Even though these areas may not be open to the general public, you’ll want to cover the openings with bird netting to eliminate any nesting and roosting activity in these areas.

9. Architectural recesses and over/underhangs: Birds may roost on overhangs or build nests in underhangs such as roofing awnings or dormer under roofings. You can block off such areas effectively with bird netting.

8. Open air structures with framework: Barns, parking garages, tents or canopies, gazebos, etc. All of these structures allow flowing air, and flying birds, to enter. You can block off ceiling areas where framework or beams provide nesting and roosting opportunities.

7. External piping, machinary or conduits: On roofing and the sides of buildings, machinary and its appendages offer may tempting spots for birds. Unfortunately, the messes left can be damaging and corrosive and greatly increase the cleaning and maintenance costs for your building.

6. Sculptures, columns and other decorative attachments: Many beautiful and distinctive buildings, with sculpture and decorations adorning the property provide many areas where birds can roost and nest. The messes left can be unsightly and corrosive. Effectively employed, durable but fine-meshed bird netting will keep these areas free from problem without losing the visual impact of this architectural detail.

5. Freshly planted seeds: Bird netting can protect freshly seeded areas from birds and small animals as well. Framed to seal the edges and providing some clearance above the ground, the netting protects the seeds and allows the new plants to sprout with problems.

4. Fragile tree or plant growing cycles: Protecting flowering trees and plants with bird netting can help these plants blossom with fruit or full flowers for your enjoyment. Durable bird netting can even keep small animals away from your plants while allowing insects to enter and pollinate your flowers.

3. Balconies: Using bird netting on open balcony railings can reduce the roosting and messes from birds.

2. Signs, billboards, etc.: Perfect roosting spots can be protected by keeping bird off of letters, light fixtures and ledges created by signs and billboards.

1. Chimneys and gutters: These high objects provide easy and popular roosting locations under which bird mess can really collect. Bird netting can keep birds from getting in to these areas and can help keep your grounds clean.

Bird netting is a safe, durable and cost effective bird repeller solution for protecting areas from the damage that roosting and nesting birds can cause.

Sometimes, too much of a good thing is not good. Such is the case oftentimes with birds – those feathered friends whose birdsong, antics and even personalities often disrupt our lives past the point of enjoyable co-existance. Both the numbers and the results of the numbers (i.e., the physical remains…) are often not just disruptive but a visual and health concern as well. When we talk about bird repellers, we can break the areas for application as follows: structures – business structures – personal land or open space – business land or open space – personal We break these down by personal and business for several reasons, not because the tools are different, but because the size, aesthetics and choice of solutions may vary. Some examples of bird repellents may help. Protecting business structures and business spaces is both in the interest of the business in protecting their assets but also valid in protecting their customers as well. Structures that lend themselves to perching or nesting birds will not only leave unsanitary residue that may affect people, plants, even auto paint jobs. Some nesting birds may also become overly protective and be a physical nuisance to people in the vicinity. In this instance, bird repelling devices, such as bird netting to prohibit nesting and perching, bird spikes (again to prevent perching and congregating on structures or things like signs and lamp posts), and sonic devices to incent them to go elsewhere. Businesses can also involve large structures and areas of land. More aggressive sonic devices may be called for where both audible and ultrasonic is used, provided that people may be more scarce so that audible measures do not distrupt them as well. Visual “scarecrows” may also be employed with such sonic devices – anything from inflatable scare shapes to predator dummies like owls and foxes to low power lasers can be used in warehouses and hangers, golf courses, parks, orchards, and in many other applications.

ACH Routing Number EASTWEST BANK

Personal structures and land, i.e., homes and backyards, are much smaller and less tall than the average commercial building so the scope and solutions will be less involved. Bird netting or animal netting may be useful in backyards to keep birds away from trees, plants or gardens that may be vulnerable, particularly during key portions of the growing season. Ultrasonic bird repellers and bird scares can be effective year round. Bird spikes can protect your house, garage, and any other structures from birds perching.

Farms, orchards, vineyards, airports and airfields, facilities such as refineries, piping stations, outdoor manufacturing or storage, garbage dumps and recycling centers, and parks or golf courses, etc. are all areas that can benefit from bird repellents. In most of these situations, you’ll want to look at sonic and ultrasonic bird repellers and bird spikes and netting. Due to the size of some of these properties, visual scares may or may not be as beneficial but can add a secondary deterrent factor in some cases.

In the areas of food production, bird repellers will help to protect your crops or product from damage due to bird droppings from nesting, roosting and perching, but also damage from bird eating or sampling of your products, such as grapes or fruit. Your need may be seasonal where you may wish to only deploy bird repellents during specific growth or fruiting times. In some cases, birds may help to keep your insect population down. Only you can determine if birds are doing more harm than good. Bird netting can be used to cover trees, grape vines, and crops. Strong and durable, bird netting will keep the birds away and can even be effective against some animal pests as well. Look for a stronger grade of netting if you need to deter rabbits or other animals in addition to birds. More powerful multi-speaker sonic and ultrasonic bird repellers can be set up in a field to keep birds away. With battery and solar support, these can be placed just about anywhere outdoors and protect large scale areas. Visual scares can be a good secondary protection, such as reflective holographic tape attached to posts that blows in the wind, or owl dummies. Manufacturing facilities, garbage or storage areas, airfields, golf courses, etc., can benefit from bird repellents to protect the area from caustic and smelly bird droppings that require frequent cleaning and maintenance activities. Birds can, of course, be a danger to airplanes and, in the case of larger birds like geese, these can be a nuisance and danger to people on golf courses and in parks. Sonic and ultrasonic bird repellers are the main tool for these open areas. Look to target the species that are giving you specific problems, from geese to seagulls to starlings or others. Bird netting or spikes may help on any structures, fencing, piping, etc. that may run through an area. For golf courses, you may want to use visual scares, such as realistic foxes or coyote forms that include sonic predator sounds. These scares may need to be moved occasionally to increase their effectiveness. Please note that with the more powerful ultrasonic bird repellers and ultrasonic pest repellers, even though you cannot hear the sounds at those frequencies, workers should take care to protect their hearing when working near the units or checking on them. Read all safety information that comes with the sonic and/or ultrasonic units.

In this article, we continue to cover cases involving open structures. In the first case, we
looked at parking garages, both above and below ground types. Here we are
addressing any open air structure, i.e., one with a roof, but one which may have only
one or two permanent walls. Examples might include outdoor patio restaurants or
bars, gas stations, outdoor music or theatre stages or concert areas, warehouses or
manufacturing facilities, barns or farm animal facilities, docks or other covered
boat/car/RV parking or maintenance areas, etc.

Due to the open nature of these types of structures and facilities, the primary goal of
bird repellers here is to preserve property and facilites by ensuring that absolutely no
nesting occurs and that general roosting and perching is also strongly discouraged.

You will need to examine your facilities first to find potential nesting areas. Ledges
created by intersecting beams, lighting or sign fixtures, electrical, piping or other
infrastructural support systems need to be identified. The two bird repellent tools that
you have available to keep nests from these areas are bird netting and bird spikes.

Keep in mind the types of birds that you may need to deal with. Swallows, for example,
can build a nest in the corner of a vertical surface that meets a roof or other wall. That
may require netting in more places that if you were dealing only with sparrows or
pigeons. Bird spikes will suffice in those cases to keep bird off of flat surfaces.

Once you have dealt with the obvious problem areas for nesting, you should move on
to consider the overall access points for birds. Crowds and traffic and loud equipment
noises will keep birds away only for so long, especially if food is available, such as at
an outdoor bar or restaurant, or in a barn or farm facility.

Look for good ultrasonic bird repellers that are designed for enclosed or semi-
enclosed spaces. Ensure that it will have enough power and speakers to cover the
area effectively and yet is safe for any people that may work in the area.

For heavily peopled areas, several lower powered units may be better than a single “blaster”
system. Even though the units operate in ultrasonic frequencies, units capable of
keeping a huge barn, hanger, or docking facility may put out enough decibels that
humans could be effected even without hearing the sound. The key factors here are
decibel level produced, the length of exposure and the proximity to the unit. (Prolonged
exposure within 10 feet of such devices is not advised without ear protection such as
ear plugs.)

When first deploying your ultrasonic bird repeller units, consider the need to possibly
blanket the internal area first to remove any existing problem, then adopt more of a
perimeter defense arrangement to keep birds from entering a facility. Look for units
that can support a 360-degree coverage for the internal space but also employ
directional speakers for covering entryways and such.

For challenging situations, you may need to utilize visual scares as well. This can
range from predator type visual scares to distractions like holographic tape, flashing
lights or even indoor laser light systems to disorient and chase away birds. In
situations where bird spikes might not be practical, such as within smaller roofed
covered structures like patio coverings, there are also long lasting, non-toxic, tacky
substances that birds will avoid.

ACH Routing Number EASTWEST BANK

This is often easier to apply in and use in tighter
spaces that sparrows or finches might find while looking for a crumb or two.

Parking Areas and Garages

We’ve previously talked about bird repeller solutions and bird repellents, such as bird netting, bird spikes, visual scares, and sonic and ultrasonic bird repellers used for businesses that are experiencing bird problems. These problems discussed relate primarily to business buildings and, to a degree, parking areas. In this ongoing series of posts, we’ll delve into more types of business premises and environments to show some possible solutions to bird problems that may exist in those situations.

First, we’ll delve into the larger issue of parking garages and parking lots. With open parking lots, there are typically signs and light posts where birds may roost. Using bird spikes is the easiest, cost-effective solution to keep birds off of these fixtures and reduce the possibility of bird droppings on cars, pavement and areas such as payment booths or kiosks.

ACH Routing Number EASTWEST BANK

Multi-level parking garages can be a more challenging environment that requires multiple bird repellent techniques.

For those garages that are underground, it is perhaps more important to keep birds from entering as they may become disoriented with all the cars and auto fumes and be unable to exit the garage. Underground garages can also be worse breeding grounds for the smell and unsafe environment that bird droppings create for people. To prevent birds from entering such garages, sonic and ultrasonic bird repellers and visual bird scares can be used. Even more general ultrasonic pest repellers may be useful to deter rodents or other animals from entering the garage as well.

The ultrasonic bird repellers and visual scares should block or blanket the areas where the birds may attempt to enter. In general, birds will stay away from the cars entering and leaving but the gate area should be targeted with these bird repellents for times when the car traffic is infrequent. If there are other open areas that allow air to flow in, you might consider covering these sections with bird netting. Air will continue to flow but birds will be kept from entering the garage area.

Open air, multi-level parking garages require a different approach. Sonic and ultrasonic bird repellers won’t play much of a role in this case. Bird netting will be appropriate only to seal off areas where concrete or steel beams create nesting cubbyholes. If there are structural areas on the face of the parking garage that allow birds to roost and nest where their droppings create a problem on the facing or below, bird netting can also be used to make these ledges inaccessible. Visual scares may be useful in areas where there are ledges inside or on the facing of the structure.

Bird spikes will probably be most effective for this type of parking structure to keep birds from roosting on signage, on structural beams, on lighting fixtures or on internal or external ledges.

By keeping your parking structure or parking lot clean and free from bird droppings, especially when they may drop on your customer’s cars, your business will maintain a good reputation and not suffer from constant customer complaints and even lawsuits. The solutions described above are durable, safe and very cost effective when you look at the alternatives.

Previously, we talked about using ultrasonic bird repellers around your home, targeting patios, balconies, decks, i.e., the types of areas that are open but offer some opportunity for birds to perch or roost for a time, thus leading to bird messes that you have to regularly clean up.

Sonic bird repellers are another effective variety of electronic pest repellers. Where ultrasonic keeps birds away by generating a variety of annoying frequencies that chase birds away (without affecting people), sonic repellers work with audible sound that repels or deters by giving birds a message that they understand to be a distress type of alarm and/or a predator sound.

Distress and alarm calls can be somewhat species targeted although if you’ve ever watched different types of birds around a bird feeder, you often see them respond to another bird’s warning cry should there be some perceived danger in the immediate area.

ACH Routing Number EASTWEST BANK

Regardless, as you look for sonic bird repellers, be sure to check what types of birds it can target.

Not all bird species are necessarily in the pest category. Pigeons, seagulls, crows, doves, geese, woodpeckers – these are typical problem birds. Be sure that the sonic repeller you choose targets the bird(s) you have the most problems with. (You can see a variety of sonic repellers from industry leader Bird-X by clicking here .)

These units are all intended for use outdoors and most have multiple speakers to allow you to target and blanket a problem area from several angles. Do realize that it takes more than just plugging it in and turning it on (although you may see some results quickly) but you may need to adjust the targeting and frequencies to repel your particular bird species effectively. Many people don’t take the time to do this and incorrectly assume that the unit does not work.

Look for dual power units, AC and battery operated, in case you don’t have electric wiring in the vicinity of your bird problem. Some may even employ solar power or solar recharging of your battery, allowing it to operate more continuously.

As bird repellents go, sonic (and ultrasonic) bird repeller units are safe, effective, durable and easy to install and use. You can use sonic units by themselves or utilize some visual scares as well. In combination, it’s a great one-two punch to keep bird messes and damage away from your property.

In other articles, we’ve talked about the types of solutions that can be applied to bird problems around houses, condos, carports, etc. Bird repeller solutions, such as bird netting, bird spikes, ultrasonic bird repellers and visual scares all have their place in helping to protect business locations too.

Businesses face the same set of challenges in protecting their property but also have the welfare of employees and customers, and in some cases the quality of their product, to safeguard from the types of problems and messes that bird roosting, nesting and swarming can cause.

Here we’ll address the basic areas of business, the buildings and parking areas. While not limiting our discussion to urban and suburban areas, in general we are talking about the small to medium size store front or offi

ACH Routing Number EASTWEST BANK

ce building. And let’s draw the distinction between impact and not-impact.

You may have bird nesting or roosting on your building or parking structure that has no impact to your customers, employees, or business. If there is a visual and environmental impact due to bird messes, then yes, deal with it. If bird roosting is incidental and of minor impact to structures, people and property, then let it be. The point is not to eradicate birds, it is to mitigate actual problems that affect your business.

First to consider are the points of entry to your business. Since these areas often have ledges, awnings, signs and the like, there are many little nooks and crannies where bird nesting can occur and some very nice roosting spots. In addition, outside piping, rooflines, window ledges, lighting fixtures, all of these offer tempting spots for birds.

The basic approach is: keep them off. For surfaces where birds perch or roost, bird spikes are the best bird repeller. Use these on signs, lighting fixtures, window and door ledges, etc. Nesting and roosting will tend to occur away from the ground level where pedestrian and other traffic is higher so bird spikes will likely be away from eye level and not detract from the visual aesthetics of your building.

Building styles vary greatly and it is possible that you may have structural features such as arches, porticos, statues, etc. on the facade of your building where birds may roost and their droppings may be found on the building and ground where they may affect pedestrians. In such cases, bird spikes and bird netting can be employeed to keep birds off of these structural elements. You may also want to employ visual scares that will repel birds at that level but will not be visible to people below.

Loading docks or maintenance areas in the rear of buildings often have additional ledges and fixtures that allow birds to nest or explore in search of water or food (garbage areas). For surfaces, bird spikes. For crevices, bird netting. You may also find bird scares to be effective for keeping birds out of loading dock areas, for example. Sonic and ultrasonic bird repellers can also be effective in detering birds from entering those areas and keeping them away from garbage areas. (General ultrasonic pest repellers can be effective with other types of pests as well.)

Parking garages typically have flat areas that allowing roosting and nesting. Bird spikes can keep problem areas bird free and bird netting can help keep birds out of the corners and recesses where they might build nests. Bird messes in parking garages can be particularly unpleasant due to the lack of air circulation and the damage they can do to car paints and finishes and to the concrete surfaces as well. Ultrasonic bird repellers and visual scares have their place in parking structures as well to keep birds from lingering too long in one place.

In general, look for actual problem areas and tackle those first. We don’t believe that you need to try to “bird proof” your building against a problem that just does not exist (but keep this information in mind in case the problem arises in the future).
